HUDSON CANYON, N.Y. — A dramatic maritime rescue unfolded off the coast near Hudson Canyon after a young man in his 20s became trapped in a boat’s propeller, leaving emergency responders and those aboard in a desperate race against time.
Initial reports indicated that the vessel had capsized, with the injured man pinned near the propeller while unconscious and suffering from severe injuries. Witnesses reported that he was bleeding heavily, and there were immediate concerns about whether he was breathing. Complicating rescue efforts, the boat’s inboard propeller was reportedly still running, preventing others on board from safely reaching him.
According to information from the scene, the vessel’s captain — later identified as the young man’s father — remained with the boat while hoping the engine would stall so that rescuers could safely attempt to free his son. The terrifying circumstances created an urgent and emotionally charged situation as those nearby awaited assistance.
As emergency crews responded, confusion initially surrounded reports from the area due to a separate boating emergency involving a capsized vessel occurring around the same time. Authorities later clarified that the incidents were unrelated.
In an encouraging update, rescuers successfully reached the injured man and freed him from the vessel. Despite suffering serious injuries, he was found to be alive. Emergency personnel transported him from the scene and brought him to Long Island, where an ambulance was waiting to rush him to a hospital for advanced medical treatment.
Officials have described the young man’s condition as critical. No additional information regarding the extent of his injuries has been released.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances that led to the incident. Family members, first responders, and members of the boating community remain hopeful as the young man receives medical care and begins what is expected to be a difficult recovery.
